Tour of Britain, 2014
Переглядів 4139 років тому
This is a cycle race something like 'Tour de France'. My clip shows the racers starting from Bath on the 6th stage of the 8-stage tour, from Bath to Hemel Hempstead, just North of London. Sound track says differently, they actually raced 129 miles to get there.

I'm originally from Coventry just down the road on the A45 and the same with my city because the sixties was a fabulous decade to live in and everything was clean and tidy and people looked very well dressed and appeared safe in large crowds with no danger of experiencing being harassed as to what has happened in future times.

1:43 I remember waiting for those buses when the buildings on the left were being constructed and the Bull Ring, the library and Rotunda had yet to be developed. Not quite as idyllic as the pictures portray even then; many beautiful buildings had been torn down. Construction sites accompanied by the sound of pneumatic drills and pile driving were paving the way to a dystopian future of making car king and wrecking public transport 😡

I'm a Brummie born in 1960, as a child my Mom would take me 'into town' every Saturday for shopping and by that i mean a bus trip into the city centre for meat from the indoor meat market & fruit & veg from the outdoor market and if I'd been good I'd get a Knickerbocker Glory from the little cafe just inside the indoor Bull Ring market.....Brum was a lovely city back in the day it was friendly it was safe and it was vibrant .... Lovely memories ❤

I was raised in Chelmsford from 1968 and remember it more or less as depicted in this film. A fascinating piece and everything looked much cleaner , tidier and nicer. And so did the people. Thanks for sharing.

Even though the Bull Ring then was just lots of concrete, it still looks better, cleaner and more inviting than now. I was born in this year and I remember when I was only 11 I could take myself off to the centre from Quinton on the number 3 bus on my own, with no worries. I even remember when I started driving in the early 80’s you could go for a drive through the centre and up Corporation Street on a Sunday and it was empty and relaxing. Such a shame how with the progression of time we’ve actually gone backwards, to an extent that the city is such a hell hole now and a no go for most, well it felt like this when I visited two years ago, maybe it’s just because I escaped 25 years ago to West Wales to give my children a better, safer upbringing 😢.

I've never been a fan of the 1974 imposition of the so-called 'county' of West Midlands. I don't mind local services being organised and administered on a wider basis but, dear bureaucrats, please keep our historic county boundaries. These towns definitely belong in Warwickshire!

This looks better than it is now. It's taken me this long to realise the former Bull Ring Shopping Centre was better in nearly everywhere than the new one. It just got neglected for some reason. I remember those gardens by the Bull Ring but never saw it looking that pristine...

I lived in Coventry till 1979 and a trip to Birmingham (usually by train) was always an adventure. This video is pretty much how I remember it. It's nothing like that today, and not in a good way.
